Second Innings, First Ball: When Leaders Become Entrepreneur-Mentors

Success is never a destination. It is merely the experience you carry into your next beginning.

Every morning, cricket teaches us one of life’s simplest truths.

The scoreboard resets to 0-0.

It doesn’t matter whether you scored a century yesterday or were dismissed for a duck. The next innings always begins with the first ball.

Life works the same way.

There comes a stage when many people believe they have earned the right to slow down, enjoy the comfort built over decades, and live on past achievements. But some people choose differently. They willingly walk away from familiar territory and enter fields where they are beginners once again.

That is the true spirit of a second innings.

From Commanding the Skies to Building New Dreams

Over the past few months, I have witnessed three inspiring journeys emerging from Dehradun.

One belongs to Air Vice Marshal Sandip Rawat, who is nurturing creativity through NeeluMusic Studio, helping artists and musicians find a professional platform.

Another is Air Vice Marshal Bhandari, who has stepped into the world of cinema as the producer of the Uttarakhandi feature film Kandali, believing that regional stories deserve a national audience.

The third is Air Vice Marshal Nainwal, founder of Ijabojyu, an entrepreneurial venture rooted in Indian culture , traditions and local identity, demonstrating that heritage itself can become a sustainable enterprise.

Three different sectors.

Music.

Cinema.

Culture and entrepreneurship.

Yet all three journeys have something remarkably similar.

None of them are extensions of their military careers.

Each represents an entirely new field.

The Courage to Become a Beginner Again

After distinguished careers in the Indian Air Force, these officers had already achieved what many aspire to accomplish in a lifetime.

Leadership.

Responsibility.

National service.

Recognition.

They had every reason to enjoy a comfortable retirement.

Instead, they chose uncertainty.

They entered industries where uniforms no longer mattered, where experience had to be translated into creativity, business, networking and innovation.

In these ventures, they are not merely founders.

They are entrepreneur-mentors.

They are building organisations while simultaneously mentoring younger generations, bringing with them qualities that startups often struggle to develop—discipline, integrity, strategic thinking, resilience and mission focus.

The Entrepreneur-Mentor Advantage

Most startups begin with passion.

Veteran-led startups begin with passion and perspective.

Years spent making high-stakes decisions create habits that become invaluable in entrepreneurship.

Mission planning becomes business strategy.

Team leadership becomes organisational culture.

Operational discipline becomes execution.

Failures become lessons rather than setbacks.

Their experience doesn’t guarantee success.

But it certainly changes how they respond to uncertainty.

Reinvention is the New Leadership

The world often celebrates founders in their twenties.

But perhaps we don’t celebrate enough those who reinvent themselves after already having successful careers.

Reinvention demands humility.

It requires admitting that despite decades of achievement, you must once again learn, experiment, make mistakes and adapt.

That may be the greatest leadership lesson of all.

Because leadership is not about holding a position.

Leadership is about continuing to create value wherever life places you.

Ball One. Again.

Whether someone is launching a music studio…

Producing a regional film…

Building a cultural enterprise…

Or packing natural food products in a small store at 28 Kalidas Road, as I do…

The rule remains unchanged.

Today is Ball One.

Yesterday’s achievements cannot build today’s business.

Yesterday’s failures cannot define today’s opportunity.

Every sunrise quietly resets the scoreboard.

0-0.

Perhaps that is life’s greatest gift.

It gives each of us permission to begin again.

The stories of Air Vice Marshal Sandip Rawat, Air Vice Marshal Bhandari and Air Vice Marshal Nainwal remind us that the most meaningful second innings are often played on completely unfamiliar pitches.

They are proving that retirement need not be an ending.

It can be the beginning of a new mission.

A mission where experience meets entrepreneurship.

Where leadership meets mentorship.

And where success is measured not merely by what we build, but by the people we inspire to build after us.

As in cricket, every great innings starts the same way.

One player.

One bat.

One first ball.

The scoreboard reads 0-0.

Everything else is yet to be written.
