🎭 Theatre of Politics: From Winks to Flying Kisses — The Curious Case of Mahua Moitra

Winking, One-Eyed Willy Politicians and Open-Eyed, Least-Bothered Voters!
She is suave, firebrand, and a gifted orator — and during the recent protest against the Election Commission of India, she even showcased her acting skills.

Having watched countless protests close-up on TV, it’s apparent that many opposition rallies are photo ops for politicians. But nothing comes closer to pure political theatre than the latest performance of Ms. Mahua Moitra, Honourable Member of Parliament.

Place this alongside the Leader of the Opposition’s famous wink during a Lok Sabha debate, and you have the perfect recipe for the non-serious, cursory nature of much of India’s politics.

The Scintillating Comeback

The case of Mahua Moitra is far more layered than mere theatrics. She resigned her Parliament membership after being found guilty by the Lok Sabha of compromising the Digital Security of Parliament — a serious breach.

Yet here she is again, unapologetic, her return a manifestation of sheer overconfidence in the perceived naivety of India’s electoral politics.

The Charges and Their Seriousness

Moitra was accused of sharing her confidential Parliament login credentials with businessman Darshan Hiranandani, allegedly in exchange for cash, gifts, and luxury items. This enabled the framing and submission of parliamentary questions to further private business interests and target rivals.

  • Ethics Committee finding: Conduct termed “unethical and unbecoming of a Member of Parliament.”
  • Date of expulsion: 8 December 2023.
  • Recommendation: Expulsion and deeper probe into the money trail.
  • Status: No criminal conviction; legally free to contest. She returned to Parliament in 2024.

If This Were a Government Servant…

If a civil servant had done the same — shared secure credentials and compromised institutional security — the likely outcomes would be:

  • Immediate suspension pending inquiry,
  • Departmental charges under Conduct Rules,
  • Dismissal from service, and
  • Possible criminal prosecution (e.g., under the Prevention of Corruption Act).

A government servant’s career? Over.
A politician’s career? Sometimes reborn stronger — complete with flying kisses at rallies.

The Broader Picture

A wink in Parliament. Flying kisses at a rally. And somewhere in between — allegations of cash-for-query and a digital breach.

It’s a potent symbol of how performance often overshadows accountability in Indian politics. In many professions, such breaches might end a career. In India’s electoral arena, they can become just another act in the grand show.
